Poll: Finding a Job Is Tough, Networking Is Key

October 26, 2009 12:14 by jllorens

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) October 26, 2009 – Even in the best of times, finding a new job is a challenge. So it is no surprise that 42% of people polled think it would be "very difficult" to find a new job in today's tough economy, according to a survey of more than 2,500 individuals on LinkedIn® by Right Management. Right Management is the talent and career management expert within Manpower, the global leader in employment services.

Forty-three percent of those responding believe getting a new job would be "somewhat difficult," and 14% would consider it "somewhat" or "very easy."

Men and women have nearly identical opinions on job hunting prospects, while respondents whose job function is in business development or sales are more upbeat than those in finance. The older the respondent, the more likely the individual is to consider the job search difficult, which may be explained in part by their typically higher salary levels.

"Losing a job is one of the top most stressful life events," said Tony Santora, Executive Vice President for Global Solutions at Right Management. "The job search process can be an anxiety-filled experience, even in a healthy economy. So stress typically comes with the territory."

Examiner Article Touts Importance of ASTD

September 29, 2009 13:06 by Kristen Fyfe

I love this quote: "Today we examine one of the foremost organizations for learning professionals - ASTD. "It's found in an article from Examiner.com titled "Organizations for learning professionals - ASTD". My handy-dandy PR service, VOCUS, puts the Examiner's circulation figure at 140,000 -- which is great. That's a lot of folks seeing a story about the value - and leadership - of ASTD in the training and development field.

Orange County Chapter of ASTD Hits the LA Airwaves

September 8, 2009 12:15 by Kristen Fyfe
The service we use that monitors where ASTD gets mentioned in the media sent me a notice today saying that a rep from the Orange County Chapter of ASTD appeared on KTTV-TV, the local Fox affiliate in Los Angeles. The transcript indicates the segment was about the value that belonging to a professional association can bring when looking for a job. You know - that power of networking we like to talk about all the time!  And it looks like the segment ran twice - once on the Morning News and again on Good Day L.A.!Kudos to the Orange County Chapter for its excellent public relations efforts!

A Policy for Using Social Media?

August 12, 2009 16:25 by Stacey Mills

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful comments on my first blog post.  I'm looking forward to receiving feedback on how to truly make this a tool that everyone can benefit from, so keep those ideas coming!

I could probably write about the use of social media (or lack thereof) in the federal government ad nauseam and not run out of things to say.  What puzzles me, is that bans on various social media vehicles aren't consistent across all agencies.  It is definitely a barrier for most federal government clients that I talk to, but there are a few agencies that are less restricted.  For example, I spoke with a client at a civilian agency today about social networking, and he mentioned that his agency has restrictions on the use of LinkedIn and Twitter, but that employees are allowed to use Facebook.  I found this quite interesting.  At the end of our discussion, he offered to become Facebook "friends" as a way to stay connected, but only with the caveat that there may be one or two embarrassing photos on his page :).

The good news is that it looks like the Defense Department is soliciting the public for help forming a social media policy.  Take a look at this article by Bob Brewin on nextgov.com:

LinkedIn Talent Advantage Launched

LinkedIn Launches New Tools to Boost HR Professionals’ Efficiency as Responses to Job Postings Double in Challenging Economy

LinkedIn Talent Advantage and New Custom Company Profiles Help Companies Respond to Market Conditions and Hire Top Talent Faster

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network with more than 35 million members, today announced LinkedIn Talent Advantage, an exclusive suite of solutions for recruiters. The newest feature of Talent Advantage is a “viewer-aware” hiring technology called LinkedIn Custom Company Profiles, designed to help companies present information that is relevant based on a job-seeker’s function, industry, location, etc.

LinkedIn saw responses to job postings on the professional network double over the last six months, resulting in more resumes for recruiters to sift through and more candidates to qualify. Yet, the best employee for the job may not be actively looking. LinkedIn Talent Advantage helps HR teams efficiently find the best talent to fill open positions, a growing challenge given HR resource constraints and the cost of making a bad hire.

“LinkedIn Talent Advantage lets recruiters unlock the power of LinkedIn’s extensive professional network so they can uncover quality passive candidates who are unlikely to be on traditional job boards,” said Francois Dufour, LinkedIn’s Senior Director of Enterprise Marketing. “Over 900 leading companies already depend on LinkedIn’s recruiting solutions. The hiring market has changed, and the new LinkedIn Talent Advantage is a game-changer for the human resources community.”

LinkedIn Talent Advantage now includes:

  • LinkedIn® Recruiter™: an exclusive tool for corporate recruiters to source top passive talent, with extended search, full profile viewing, direct messaging and team collaboration tools
  • LinkedIn® Jobs Network™: job postings on LinkedIn that deliver precise targeting, candidate match recommendations and viral distribution of job postings throughout the network
  • LinkedIn® Talent Direct™: InMail campaigns to reach more potential candidates faster and more precisely
  • LinkedIn® Employer Advertising™: advertising on LinkedIn’s uncluttered environment that can be targeted to specific groups of professionals
  • NEW LinkedIn® Custom Company Profiles™: rich and extensible company profile with viewer-aware information that can adapt to the viewer’s location, industry, function, etc. to build an employment brand

Company Profiles have been available on LinkedIn since early 2008. Now LinkedIn Custom Company Profiles allow companies and recruiters to develop their employer brand and uniquely inform and engage high value candidates with content specifically designed for particular profiles.

For example, viewers of a LinkedIn Custom Company Profile have the opportunity to discover:

  • Recruitment messaging that helps HR teams appeal to candidates on a personal level
  • Employee spotlights that introduce ”birds of a feather” peers
  • Interactive polling that engages viewers on the page
  • Video clips that showcase corporate culture
  • Recruiter Profiles and Career Page links that make it easy for interested candidates to take action
  • Jobs with “company insider” information that show how a job seeker is connected with the company and the job poster

In addition to adding LinkedIn Custom Company Profiles to the LinkedIn Talent Advantage suite of solutions, LinkedIn has also improved LinkedIn Recruiter and LinkedIn Jobs Network, which now includes LinkedIn Talent Match, a proprietary technology that automatically recommends talent matches for job postings. It also includes “Super Viral” forwarding that makes it easier (just two clicks) to forward jobs to people who would be interested or would know a good fit for the open position.
