Examiner Article Touts Importance of ASTD

September 29, 2009 13:06 by Kristen Fyfe

I love this quote: "Today we examine one of the foremost organizations for learning professionals - ASTD. "It's found in an article from Examiner.com titled "Organizations for learning professionals - ASTD". My handy-dandy PR service, VOCUS, puts the Examiner's circulation figure at 140,000 -- which is great. That's a lot of folks seeing a story about the value - and leadership - of ASTD in the training and development field.

ASTD Wins PR Award

September 29, 2009 11:27 by Kristen Fyfe
Ok. We'll blow our own horn here. Last week, at the annual awards dinner for the Public Relations Society of America National Capital Chapter, ASTD won a certificate of excellence for our 2008 Annual Report. Any organization doing business in the metropolitan D.C. area can submit their work for categories ranging from Public Service Campaigns to video productions to website design. And there are some BIG companies that compete for these awards, like Booz Allen Hamilton and Ogilvy Pubic Relations Worldwide. So, yeah, we're proud to have won a Certificate of Excellence Award for the hard work that went into the 2008 Annual Report titled "The Value of Belonging." For the full story, as reported on the news wires and picked up by the Associated Press, among others, click here. And Congrats to the amazing team of creative professionals for their hard work on this report!

Orlando Sun Sentinel Pins Teambuilding Story to ASTD Ft. Lauderdale Chapter Meeting

September 25, 2009 10:23 by Kristen Fyfe
At a recent meeting of the Ft. Lauderdale chapter of ASTD a speaker named Cher Holton was brought in to teach team building techniques to members. That session is the peg for a story titled "Go Team! Need for Collaboration Greater When There Are Fewer Employees" which offers so tips and strategies for teambuilding. This is the second story columnist Marcia Heroux Pounds has written using a speaker at an ASTD chapter meeting to peg a broader column on workplace issues. Last time her column was picked up in many major publications around the country (see blog posting here). It'll be interesting to see if this story is likewise syndicated!

ASTD mentioned in NY Daily News Story about Murdered Yale Student

September 18, 2009 13:22 by Kristen Fyfe

So, this isn't your average media "hit." In cataloging the places ASTD has popped up in the news this week, I ran across a mention in the NY Daily News. It's a story on workplace violence and it cites information from our flagship magazine T+D. Right as I happened across this, Paula Ketter, T+D's awesome editor strolled by my office and I showed her the clip.  She remembers someone blogging on T+D's blog about the study on workplace violence that is mentioned in the NY Daily News article. Here's the relevant paragraph from the story:

"The Workplace Violence Institute says workplace violence is 'any act against an employee that creates a hostile work environment and negatively affects the employees, either physically or psychologically,' according to T D magazine."

While I would never have expected to see T+D in a story about a murdered college student, this does go to show the rising influence of blogs as sources of information for reporters.

Element K Blog Salutes ASTD

September 8, 2009 12:24 by Kristen Fyfe
Ran across this blog post from Element K talking about how everyone's talking about social media. Tom Stone, the guy who posted this, salutes ASTD's recognition of the game-changing nature of social media for learning professionals. Hat tip to Tom for linking to Tony Bingham's T+D article, "Learning Gets Social" (and the podcast of it) and also to a press release about ASTD's research report on Web 2.0 technologies.

Orange County Chapter of ASTD Hits the LA Airwaves

September 8, 2009 12:15 by Kristen Fyfe
The service we use that monitors where ASTD gets mentioned in the media sent me a notice today saying that a rep from the Orange County Chapter of ASTD appeared on KTTV-TV, the local Fox affiliate in Los Angeles. The transcript indicates the segment was about the value that belonging to a professional association can bring when looking for a job. You know - that power of networking we like to talk about all the time!  And it looks like the segment ran twice - once on the Morning News and again on Good Day L.A.!Kudos to the Orange County Chapter for its excellent public relations efforts!

One ASTD Chapter Meeting, Multiple Media Hits

September 2, 2009 10:06 by Kristen Fyfe

Ah, the power of syndication. Last week I ran across a story about employee engagement, written by Marcia Heroux Pounds. I was excited by it because in her story Pounds quoted Julie Staub, the VP of HR for AutoNation the nation's largest auto retailer, who was speaking to a local ASTD chapter about the pride employees take when their company takes a leadership role. The ASTD reference was at the top of the story:

"'I think our people are proud to be part of a company taking a leadership role,' Staub recently told local chapter members of the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD).'"

Pounds used the Cash for Clunkers program as her hook and that approach apparently intrigued papers across the country. I've found no less than 14 outlets that have picked up the story in the last few days. From the Baltimore Sun to the Fresno Bee, the story has received some good coverage. And that is good news for ASTD chapters everywhere!

ASTD's Galagan featured in HR Executive Story on Army Wiki Use

August 28, 2009 15:36 by Kristen Fyfe
Anyone paying attention to ASTD lately knows the organization has embraced the concept of social learning as an effective tool for training and development. Executive editor Pat Galagan continues to copious amounts of research on social networks and Web 2.0 technologies and how they are being implemented to foster training. Last week a reporter from HR Executive magazine called wanting to talk to someone at ASTD who could comment on a recent New York Times story detailing the use of wikis by the U.S. Army in their training efforts. Pat's knowledge was just what the reporter needed.  You can read the full article here.
